Can chameleons really turn into any colour, anywhere?

No, chameleons cannot copy every colour around them; they change colour mostly to show their feelings and control their heat.

Chameleons change colour, but it is not a trick to hide. They can only switch between certain colours that belong to their own kind. For example, a green chameleon cannot turn red, even if it is sitting somewhere red.

When a chameleon changes colour, it is really telling us how it feels. Its colour can change when it is angry, when it is scared, or when it meets another chameleon. Its colour can also get darker when it wants to warm up in the sun.

This colour change happens because of special crystal layers in their skin. These crystals bounce light in different ways, and that changes the colour of the skin. So a chameleon cannot turn into every colour like a magician. It can only use its own set of colours.
