How are memories kept in our brain?
Our memories are kept in special links that billions of cells in our brain make with each other.
Our brain is made of tiny cells called neurons. When something happens to us, those neurons send signals to each other and make a link between them. When we remember something, our brain is really just replaying that link.
Some memories disappear very fast, because our brain does not think they matter. But if we think about a memory a lot, or if we feel something very strong at that moment, the link gets stronger and the memory stays with us. That is why happy or scary memories are usually remembered for longer.
Our brain has a special part called the hippocampus. New memories wait here for a while first, then they move to other parts of the brain to be kept for a long time. You can think of it like putting a book on the table first, then later putting it on the shelf.
