Why do animals hibernate?

Animals hibernate because it gets very hard to find food in winter, so they slow their bodies down to save energy.

When winter comes, the air turns cold, plants wither, and insects disappear. Some animals cannot find food during this time. So in summer and autumn they eat a lot and store fat, then fall into a deep sleep.

During hibernation, an animal's heart beats very slowly, its breathing slows down, and its body temperature drops. This way, its body uses very little energy. The fat it stored gives it enough energy to last until spring.

Bears, hedgehogs, bats, and some squirrels are animals that hibernate. When spring comes and the air warms up and food becomes plentiful again, the animal wakes up and starts moving again.
