Why don't footprints left on the Moon disappear?
The Moon has no wind or rain, so footprints stay just as they are and don't get wiped away.
When we walk on Earth, our footprints vanish quickly. That's because wind blows the ground around, and rain falls and washes the marks away. But the Moon has no air, so there is no wind there. There's no water either, and it never rains.
Astronauts have stepped onto the Moon and walked there since 1969. The footprints they left are still sitting on the Moon's dusty surface. There is nothing there to wipe them away, so they can stay unspoiled for thousands of years.
The Moon's surface is covered by a thin layer of dust called 'regolith'. When an astronaut's boot presses into this dust, a footprint forms easily. And because there's no wind, that footprint never gets disturbed.
