Why do we cry tears?

We cry tears to protect our eyes, clean them, and sometimes to show our feelings.

There are tiny glands above our eyes called tear glands. These glands always make a small amount of tears. This tear keeps our eyes wet, and protects them from dust and germs.

Sometimes a bit of dust gets in our eye, or a strong smell comes from cutting an onion. Then the tear glands quickly make more tears. These tears try to wash away and clean the harmful thing in our eye.

There are also tears we cry when we feel sad, very happy, or angry. These are called emotional tears. Scientists think these tears help lower stress in our body.

So tears are a special liquid that both protect our eyes and show our feelings.
