What do engineers do?

Engineers are people who use science and maths to design and build new things to solve problems.

Engineers work to make the world a better place. They design bridges, buildings, cars, toys, phones, and even space rockets. Before they build something, they think very carefully and make a plan.

Every engineer is an expert in a different area. Some build buildings, some write computer programs, and some design planes. But they all do the same thing: they find a problem and come up with an idea to solve it.

Engineers are very curious. They keep asking questions like, 'How does this work?' or 'How can I make this better?' Then they try things out, make mistakes, and try again. That is how they find the best answer.

Quick facts

  • Engineers use science and maths to solve problems.
  • There are different kinds of engineering, like civil, computer, mechanical, and space engineering.
  • Before engineers build something, they draw a plan and do sums.
  • Engineers test their ideas by making small models.
  • Planes, bridges, and smartphones were all designed by engineers.
  • If an idea does not work, engineers fix it and try again.
