Why do people speak different languages?

People lived far apart from each other in different places, so different languages slowly appeared.

A long time ago, people lived in small groups. Each group talked among themselves, and over time they made up their own words and sounds. As groups moved further apart, their languages grew more different too, just like the same game being played with different rules in different towns.

Mountains, seas, and long distances kept people apart. People on one side of a mountain rarely met the people on the other side. So even if they once spoke the same language, two different languages appeared over hundreds of years.

Also, every group of people lived in a different place, ate different food, and believed different things. These differences showed up in their language too. In a place with lots of snow, many words for snow appeared. Near the sea, many words for fish appeared.

Today, more than seven thousand languages are spoken around the world. Each language carries the history and culture of the people who speak it.
